Learn to set boundaries to protect your relationship and your mental health.
You’re not their therapist or their doctor. You’re their friend, teammate, family member, etc. So, don’t fix, don’t preach. Just be there.
So as we’re being there for someone, it’s really important that we know our role. We’re not this person’s counselor or their psychiatrist or their teacher, we’re just this person’s friend or sibling or teammate; just someone who cares about this person. And as such we should just be there to support this person throughout the conversation. But while we’re doing this we want to make sure we’re setting boundaries so that we’re not having any negative impacts on the friendship and that we’re not crossing any lines. We also want to make sure that we’re aware of our biases so they’re not having any impact on the conversation as well. We also want to make sure that throughout the conversation, wherever you can, you’re mentioning other resources this person can use just so they can get any help that they need and so that you can just be there to support that person.
